HULL CONSTRUCTION & SAFETY

We freely, and publicly, list our design notes for Misty of Gosford in the hope they might be of some assistance to anyone on a similar journey.

Brief overview of design considerations

In the initial design stage, we felt the greatest cruising risk was of a
sinking
as a result of hitting a hard object such as a
 Submerged lost shipping container,
Collision with a break wall or a
 Submerged offshore reef.

As we had, over time, witnessed the sinking of several fibreglass vessels the decision to build in Steel for maximum hull integrity was an easy one to make.
(This was later to prove a Life Saving decision)

·       We considered that the second most important consideration was
Crew Safety
when at sea in adverse weather conditions.
We, therefore, decided to have
·       Rigid hip high stainless Safety Rails.
·       Oversize rigging with a robust mast.
·       Steel Hardtop over companionway &
Stainless Steel frame cockpit cover for
crew protection in case of dismasting.

The next consideration was the
Personal Security & Comfort
of the occupants.

HULL CONSTRUCTION & SAFETY DETAILS

Length on deck 11 metres.
LOA 12 Metres.
Beam 3.3 Metres.
Draft 2 Metres.
Loaded displacement 10 tons(approx)

Reinforced steel hull construction.

There are two steel Crash Barriers
built into the bow.

WATERPROOF BULKHEADS

·       Both the chain locker and the Main waterproof Bulkhead forward of the saloon have steel positive closing waterproof doors.
---------

 KEEL HUNG RUDDER

·       Keel hung rudder for rudder integrity
·       Large steel rudder with custom 8% leading edge for high response manoeuvrability and less drain on the auto pilot.
---------

ALL WEATHER STEEL HARD TOP OVER COMPANIONWAY

·       Serves as weather protection at the
cabin entry area and
·       Positive mechanical protection for the
Crew from personal injury in case of falling boom or
complete dismasting.
---------

STURDY STAINLESS STEEL FRAMED COCKPIT COVER

Serves as sun & rain cockpit weather protection but designed to afford positive mechanical protection from falling boom or whole of mast collapse.
·       Also supports three 80w Solar Panels.
·       “Lowrance” Chart plotter/GPS/Depth-sounder/Fishfinder.
·       And an overhead stainless steel Fishing Rod
Rack.
·

METAL SEA-COCKS

All Hull Openings are fitted with steel flange mounted Metal (stainless steel or bronze) Ball Sea-Cocks.
----------

SAFETY GRAB RAILS

The cockpit and hard top area is fitted
with eight generous solid stainless steel safety grab rails.
-----------

HEAVY WEATHER VIEWING PORTS

There are two viewing ports, one either side of the companionway, so the cockpit may be observed from within the cabin in the case of when the storm drop boards are installed and there is another viewing port in the cabin top above the nav station for monitoring the mast, boom & sails.
